BAGHDAD, Aug 26 - An Islamic extremist group has killed Italian journalist Enzo Baldoni in Iraq, Al-Jazeera television reported Thursday.
Baldoni's captors, a group calling itself the Islamic Army in Iraq, had on Tuesday threatened to kill their hostage unless Italy withdrew its 3 000 troops from Iraq within 48 hours.
The Italian government initially rejected the kidnappers' ultimatum, saying it would maintain its "civil and military" presence in Iraq, but early on Thursday Rome said it was prepared to pull out its soldiers only if the interim government in Baghdad requested it. Journal Desk

Iraqi Militants Abduct Italian Journalist
BAGHDAD, Aug 24 - An Iraqi militant group has kidnapped an Italian journalist missing since last week and has threatened to kill him unless Italy withdraws its troops from Iraq in 48 hours, al-Jazeera television reported Wednesday.
The group, calling itself the Islamic Army in Iraq, abducted Enzo Baldoni, a freelance reporter writing a book on the resistance of Iraq, the Qatar-based television said, citing a video tape from the group.
Baldoni, whose identification cards were shown in the tape, spoke directly to the camera identifying himself as a journalist.
Abu Hafs al-Masri brigades, suspected of ties to al-Qaeda, had threatened attacks on Italy and its citizens in Iraq as long as Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi maintained troops in the country, the group said in statements posted on Islamic Web sites.
At the start of the month, the al-Qaeda-linked group gave Italy 15 days to withdraw 3,000 troops from Iraq. Journal Desk
