TWMN Participates in OneWorld Regional Conference
The Third World Media Network (TWMN) participated in the regional partners' conference of the OneWorld Network held in the Indian capital of New Delhi from March 11 to 12, 2004. The main theme of the conference was Working Together to Achieve Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). TWMN President Sohel Manzur, who attended the conference held at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi, highlighted the potentials of the media in facilitating achievement of the MDGs and said the potentials remain largely unutilized.
Explaining, he said most NGOs (non-governmental organisations) or development agencies are not very careful about publicizing their activities. They maintain a safe distance with the media, fearing adverse criticism. But the fact is that the media could be the best partners of the NGOs in all areas of their activities.
The NGOs often undermine the importance of getting a feature report published in a newspaper on a microcredit programme, or a women empowerment scheme, or a self-employment initiative. The attitude of the NGOs is evident in their budgetary allocation for the public relations or media relations department.
This is also evident in the rank of the persons dealing with media in the administrative hierarchy of the NGOs, the TWMN President said, adding it would be hard to find a media relations official of an NGO at the level of director.
Drafting press releases and sending them to newspapers for publication should not be the only role of a media relations official of an NGO. The person in charge of the media should be in the forefront of the strategy planning and policymaking as well as advocacy and campaign activities of the NGO.
The TWMN strongly feels the potentials of the media have to be utilized to maximize the outcome of the efforts being made by the NGOs to achieve the development goals.
Representatives of the OneWorld partner organisations at the conference spoke on the importance of networking and use of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools to build capacity and facilitate achievement of the MDGs.
The TWMN partnered with the OneWorld, a global network of NGOs, in February, 2004.
